ImmunizationsThe Immunization Program within the LDH Office of Public Health administers the Vaccines for Children Program, through which public, purchased vaccine is available at no charge to enrolled public and private health care providers for eligible children.
Children up to age 18 are available for vaccines through this program if they are:
- Medicaid Eligible
- American Indian or Alaskan Native - as defined by the Indian Health Services Act.
Underinsured children are eligible to receive vaccine only if they are served by a Federally Qualified Health Center, Rural Health Clinic or Parish Health Unit.
Children who have health insurance that covers the cost of vaccinations are not eligible for program benefits.
It is important to understand that no vaccine is 100 percent “safe”. Vaccines can cause minor side effects such as fevers or rashes and can sometimes also result in some serious side effects, just like medications. To learn more about the possible side effects of vaccines, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website on vaccines.
The Immunizations Program works with health officials around the state to update and monitor the Louisiana Immunization Network for Kids (LINKS). This web application allows doctors, nurses and other health professionals to search for their patients' vaccination records in a central location. In addition, authorized users can add and edit patient records and vaccination records, as well as maintain facility, physician, and lot number data.
