To improve the health of Louisiana's moms and babies by making positive impacts on women's health, infant health and hospital-based women and infant care.

Our Goals: 

• Create a culture of continuous quality improvement and safety in Louisiana's birthing hospitals
• Improve birth outcomes and reduce Medicaid costs by fostering a population of healthier Louisiana women
• Assess and improve the behavioral health of Louisiana's pregnant women
• Increase Department of Health and Hospitals data capacity and performance measurement of maternity care

The nexus of policy change in birth outcomes will lead to a better Louisiana health system through implementation of better care models, dynamic data and reporting systems and lasting community partnerships.

Chief among the goals of the Birth Outcomes Initiative (BOI) is creating a sustainable infrastructure for addressing birth outcomes. Healthy babies start with healthy mothers.  The health of a woman is comprised of more than her prenatal and delivery experience. Current evidence recognizes birth outcomes as the end product of not only the nine months of pregnancy but the entire life course of the mother before the pregnancy. By June of 2012, the BOI will have set in motion the development and implementation of several key initiatives that as a whole will serve as the foundation for women's health care delivery in Louisiana.
